Mississippi is choosing a new Secretary of State for the first time in eight years, and the office that sets the training standard for every election official in this state is going to be handed to someone.
I have stood in a courtroom and proved, on the record, that our election safeguards can fail.
Every vote represents a real person.
In 2013, I stood by a road in the cold holding my own campaign sign. A woman I had never met pulled into a Dollar General, walked a hundred yards across a vacant lot, and offered to hold it for me. Two hours later she was still there, waving at cars. I lost that election. I have never forgotten her.
Every lawful vote belongs to someone like her. Someone who showed up and trusted a stranger with a piece of their future. They are owed care, not carelessness.

Mississippi votes on paper, but its audit law reviews procedures, not the count, and only after the contest period ends.
I would ask the Legislature to require a uniform check of a random sample of paper ballots against the machine totals, in primaries and general elections, before results are certified.

I would keep those filing systems running, tell business owners plainly when they are not, and make the office a practical first stop for the entrepreneurs and inventors building something here.
